Founded in 1900, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) led public health campaigns against several epidemics, and its notable achievements include the first isolation of HIV in Latin America and the decoding of BCG to enable tuberculosis vaccine production. Today, Fiocruz is one of the most respected research, higher education and public health institutions in Latin America, with more than 13,000 employees. Fiocruz has an impressive product portfolio consisting of five biopharmaceuticals, 15 diagnostics agents and 33 medicines (including retroviral drugs), with an annual production capacity of 150 million doses of viral and bacterial vaccines.
